Frequently Asked Questions About Safe Pet Transportation
Clients often ask if they should sedate their pet for the flight thinking that it would help keep them calm. However, it is recommended by the AVMA, (American Veterinary Medical Association), by Jet-A-Pet, and most all Professional Pet Shippers that you DO NOT give tranquilizers to your pet when traveling. This is for a number of reasons but, most importantly, they can increase the risk of heart and respiratory problems. This can especially be an issue for snub-nose dogs. In fact, some airlines may require you to sign a statement that your pet has not be tranquilized.
People often assume that the pets are with the passenger baggage. This is not the case. Your pet will travel in a special section of the cargo hold that is specifically designated for Live Animals. This area is a secured space inside the belly of the aircraft that is away from the other baggage and cargo. Their crates are secured with straps to prevent movement during the flight. The area is pressure controlled and temperature controlled by the pilots just as the passenger cabin is. The pilots are made aware if Live Animals are aboard the plane in the cargo hold and the they have full control in order to regulate and oversee the temperature and pressure from take-off to landing.

Jet-A-Pet's VIP Care starts at your home, kennel, friend/relatives house or wherever your pets are located. From there, we will escort them to the airport and tender them to the flight. Upon arrival at the destination airport, a Jet-A-Pet associate will be standing by to collect them from the flight, handle any customs clearance/release forms and get under way for the ride and the final leg of the trip to ensure a safe and comfortable arrival at your pet's new home.
There are a number of factors that determine that total cost of your pets' transport. These factors include the number of animals being transported, if the animals are transported together (on one airway bill/flight) or separately, the weight & size of the carrier the pet travels in, the origin & destination, and the services you request. Keep in mind, Jet-A-Pet is not an airline and we are a not less-expensive option then to either 1) fly the pet as "excess baggage" when you fly on the same aircraft OR; 2) if you are transporting your pet Domestically and do not require pick-up and delivery service at the origin or destination, book the flight yourself.
When preparing your pet for their flight, it is best if they travel on an empty stomach. The reason for this is to avoid any hazards which could arise from gastrointestinal distress caused by motion sickness. We advise, for morning flights, to feed the evening prior to the flight but, not to feed the morning before the flight. For an evening flight, we recommend you feed no less then 5 hours prior to the flight. In addition, be sure to always have fresh water available, keeping your pet well hydrated is the most imperative factor. For all dogs, especially for active, high energy dogs, it's important to keep a good exercise routine the days prior to the flight and mild exercise or walk the day of travel.
Please be aware, just because a carrier is labeled "Airline Approved" does not always mean it is approved by ALL airlines or ALL breeds. Every airline has their own regulations and some airlines require, what they consider to be "fighting breeds", to use wooden carriers. Most often, for transport originating in the US, we use carriers made from a heavy duty plastic shell, with ventilation on all 4 sides, and has metal screws and bolts to connect the top & bottom. It is important to use, not necessarily the cheapest carrier but, the strongest most durable one. We sell and recommend Sky Kennels but also recommend the Deluxe Vari Kennels, both of which are made by Pet Mate.
